PATEK PHILIPPE, REF. 5135P-001

Introduced in 2004 as a tribute to the Art Deco watches Patek Philippe produced for the Gondolo & Labouriau retailer in the early twentieth century, the Reference 5135 "Gondolo Calendario" is one of the most architecturally distinctive complications the manufacture has ever created. Its elongated, cushion-shaped case, with its sharply beveled angles and hand-finished surfaces, is widely regarded by collectors as one of the finest examples of modern casemaking in haute horlogerie. Of the four metals in which the 5135 was produced, the platinum version was made for the shortest period, from 2006 to 2011 only, making it by far the rarest configuration of the reference. This example, from 2007, is presented in complete original condition with its full set of Patek Philippe accessories.

Collector's Note

The Annual Calendar complication housed in this watch is a proprietary Patek Philippe invention, patented in 1996 and first introduced to the world in the Reference 5035. Unlike a perpetual calendar, which requires no correction at all, the annual calendar needs just one manual adjustment per year, on March 1st, to account for the shorter month of February. It is, by design, the most practical calendar complication ever created for daily wear, combining near-perpetual accuracy with a mechanism far less complex and fragile than a full perpetual calendar.

The platinum 5135P was discontinued along with the entire 5135 family, and its short five-year production window means that examples in complete original condition with full documentation are genuinely uncommon. Collectors have drawn comparisons between the 5135 and the legendary Reference 5020, another discontinued Patek with an unconventional case shape that has grown steadily in desirability since its discontinuation. The present example, with its complete set including the original Certificate of Origin, represents the most complete and documentable state in which this reference can be acquired.
