Collector's Note

The Day-Date made its debut in 1956 as the first wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full. Reserved from the beginning for precious metals, it sat at the summit of the Oyster Perpetual line. The earliest 6510 and 6511 references were brief predecessors to the Ref. 6611. It retained the 36 mm case and defining calendar format, but introduced the improved Calibre 1055. This automatic movement used a revised balance system and formed the technical foundation for the second generation of the Day-Date.

The Ref. 6611 is notable as the first Rolex to carry the now-familiar Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified designation on its dial. Its Calibre 1055 operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and has no quickset calendar. The day and date are advanced together by moving the hands through midnight. Rolex supplied the Day-Date with multiple language discs for international markets, and the Spanish indication gives this example a direct link to that early global approach. The warm yellow-gold case, pie-pan dial, Alpha hands, and leather strap result in an elegant presentation of a short-lived and historically significant early Day-Date reference.
