Rolex Day date ref 1803, jubille band, full set
This Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date Ref. 1803 is an exceptionally complete early example of the reference, delivered in 1960 and crafted in 18k yellow gold. It combines the defining codes of the first in-house Day-Date generation: a 36 mm Oyster case, fluted bezel, acrylic crystal with Cyclops lens, and a silver pie-pan dial with applied gold indexes. The Italian day disc at twelve, shown here as LUNEDI, reinforces the period character of the watch. Most notably, it is fitted with a rare original 18k yellow-gold Jubilee bracelet. The five-link construction offers a different rhythm from the more familiar President bracelet and gives this early Day-Date an especially distinctive profile on the wrist.
Rolex introduced the Day-Date in 1956 as the first wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full. The Ref. 1803 arrived around 1960 as the third major generation of the model, succeeding the short-lived 6611 and bringing Rolex's own 1500-series movement architecture to its flagship calendar watch. The early Calibre 1555 runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour and uses the traditional non-quickset system, so the day and date are advanced together by moving the hands through midnight. This direct and mechanical interaction is a defining feature of the first 1803 watches.
The Jubilee bracelet is the key point of distinction in this configuration. Though the President bracelet became inseparable from the public image of the Day-Date, Rolex supplied select period examples on the five-link Jubilee bracelet. Its presence here is further strengthened by a complete group of original accessories. The Italian warranty records the 1960 delivery, while the matching presentation box, chronometer certificate, and hangtags preserve the context in which the watch was originally sold. Combined with the Italian calendar, silver pie-pan dial, and early Calibre 1555, this complete Ref. 1803 represents a particularly evocative expression of the first in-house Day-Date generation.
