Rolex GMT master ref 6542 original bakelite bezel from 1956
This 1956 Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 6542 belongs to the first chapter of the GMT-Master story. Introduced for the new age of intercontinental travel, it established the essential language of the model: a second 24-hour hand, a bidirectional 24-hour bezel, and a distinct red and blue day-night scale. This example retains the defining element of the earliest production, an original Bakelite bezel with radium luminous numerals. The translucent depth of the Bakelite gives the red and blue insert a character that later aluminum inserts could never reproduce. Here it is paired with an exceptionally preserved glossy black gilt dial retaining its original radium luminous material, creating a coherent and highly evocative first-generation presentation.
Rolex introduced the GMT-Master in 1955 as a navigation instrument for the growing world of commercial aviation, with Pan American Airways among its early airline partners. The Ref. 6542 was the original execution and remained in production only until 1959. The 1956 date places this example in the early Calibre 1036 period. Its compact 38 mm case has no crown guards, giving the watch a notably slimmer profile than the GMT-Master references that followed. The red GMT hand is coupled to the local hour hand, so a second time zone is read by rotating the 24-hour bezel rather than by independently jumping the local hour hand.
The Bakelite bezel is unique to the earliest 6542 watches and is the heart of this configuration. Rolex used a transparent, plastic-like material with radium numerals set beneath its surface, which creates the unusual visual depth visible in this example. Because the material was fragile and the radium content prompted replacement campaigns, many watches later received aluminum inserts. An original Bakelite bezel retaining its original radium, together with a matching black gilt radium dial in exceptional condition, is therefore a rare survival of the model as it was conceived. Original radium components are historical material and any handling or servicing should be entrusted to a qualified vintage-watch specialist.
