RARE Rolex Daytona Ref 6265 14k Gold
The Rolex Daytona Cosmograph Reference 6265 in 14k yellow gold is one of the most desirable configurations of the manual-wind Daytona era. Produced from 1972 until Rolex transitioned to automatic movements in 1988, the 6265 is defined by its screw-down chronograph pushers, first introduced experimentally with the Reference 6240 in 1965. This innovation, combined with the 7mm Triplock crown, conferred genuine water resistance to the Daytona chronograph, a fact proudly stated by the word "Oyster" on the dial. This example, dating to 1978 with a 5.6 million serial, was produced for the US market and is cased in 14k yellow gold on a matching rivet Oyster bracelet.
The 14k yellow gold version of the Reference 6265 was produced specifically for the American market, where 14k gold was the standard for fine jewellery and watch cases. This makes it a distinctly US-market piece with a provenance that differs from the 18k gold European examples. The case is in overall very good condition, with the lugs maintaining strong proportions, sharp edges and corners, and the engravings between the lugs remaining crisp, as are the hallmarks on the inside lugs. The champagne dial is in very good condition, and the bracelet presents well. The gold tachymeter bezel and the warm tone of the 14k case and bracelet create a unified and deeply appealing aesthetic that is characteristic of the finest manual-wind Daytonas of the 1970s.
